My external hard drive is busted

Actually, I'm not sure if it's busted or not, but my computer and laptop sure won't recognize it anymore. Every time I plug the USB cable into either the PC or laptop, and I try to open the hard drive from My Computer, the darn thing keeps telling me that it isn't formatted and that it should be formatted. Problem is, I have tons and tons of photographs  inside it, and reformatting would completely erase them all. So now I'm in huge caca.

I e-mailed WD for a solution, and they just gave me an answer from a FAQ. Great. And then they say "you may need to consult a data retrieval service."

Da hell?

I'm sure a local IT whizz kid could help you retrieve your files on the HD, but it does sound sick to me.

I looked all over the internet for answers, and I have found none. So I guess I'll have to contact some of my nerdoid friends.
